Visiting Outer Island
Outer Island is open for visitation by individuals and families from the end of May until on or about September 25th. Reservations are not required. The island is open and staffed by Island Keepers on weekdays from 8AM until sunset. On weekends and holidays, Visitor Services Volunteers from the Friends of Outer Island staff the island from 9AM until 4PM. Extended hours may be offered depending on volunteer availability. The island may be closed at any time due to inclement weather. Pets are not permitted on the island.
Outer Island Activities (Please remember to Leave No Trace)

Picnicking- pavilion, sundeck, pink granite rocks

Wildlife observation- common and roseate terns, American oystercatchers, green herons, and egrets have all been seen from the island, in addition to migratory birds, crustaceans and other aquatic species.

Photography & Art- many opportunities exist to photograph, paint, or sketch wildlife, seascapes, and seasonal flowers.
Groups interested in environmental education programs on weekdays must schedule visitation at least two weeks before the intended date by e-mailing Vincent Breslin (Professor, SCSU) at breslinv1@southernct.edu. Include Outer Island Visit as the subject and provide the name of the organization, the cell phone number of the lead person, the primary and secondary requested dates and a short description of activities. Groups are limited to 30 people including any chaperones.
Access
Small non-motorized watercraft such as kayaks, canoes, rowboats or dinghy's may land on the designated beach in front of the pavilion.
Boats may tie up at the floating dock for a limited time and in accordance with posted rules, provided the boat does not project past the front of the dock so that the ferry may pick up and drop off passengers. Landing at any other location is not permitted.
The Thimble Islands Ferry Company provides daily ferry service for visitors to the island during the season and times the island is open.
